Novel Methodologies Unit

The Novel Methodologies Unit will provide necessary resources to those research projects in the OSCTR that would benefit from development of new approaches in biostatistics, epidemiology, and informatics, as well as to provide leadership to aid faculty currently engaged in original research on improving research design and analysis methodologies.

Services Provided

  • Identify promising areas for the development of novel methodologies or the use of known methods in a new area of research
  • Provide opportunities for the development and application of these new methods
  • Organize short courses in novel epidemiological or biostatistical approaches to complex problems
  • Organize multidisciplinary discussion panels to stimulate the development of novel approaches to address biomedical questions

Workshops

  • The Novel Methodology Unit of the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Research Design (BERD) Key Component Activity of the Oklahoma Shared Clinical and Translational Resources (OSCTR) is hosting a training workshop entitled INTRODUCTION TO BAYESIAN STATISTICS. The 2.5-day workshop is scheduled for May 18 (8:30 AM - 5 PM), May 19 (9 AM - 5 PM) and May 20 (9 AM - noon). The format includes in-class didactic lectures and practical applications of concepts using WinBUGS software. The workshop will introduce participants to estimation, inference and hypothesis testing within a Bayesian framework. No prior knowledge of Bayesian statistics is required; however, attendees should have completed at least one prior introductory course in statistics or biostatistics.

  • The Novel Methodology Unit of the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Research Design (BERD) Key Component Activity of the Oklahoma Shared Clinical and Translational Resources (OSCTR) is hosting a training workshop on Health Economics Analysis Methods. The 2.5-day workshop is scheduled for May 19 (9 AM - 5 PM), May 20 (9 AM - 5 PM) and May 21 (9 AM - noon). The format includes in-class didactic lectures and practical applications of concepts using Excel software. The workshop will introduce participants to methods of cost valuation of control or intervention programs, economic evaluation of health care (i.e. cost minimization, cost-effectiveness, cost-utility and cost-benefit analyses), and definitions and use of burden measures (DALYs vs QALYs).
